Heroes of Black History -- Rosa Parks

Disclosure: Blue Slip Media sent me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

February is Black History Month! The thing I love about Black History Month is reading a friend's posts on Facebook. He is black and now a vice principal but was a high school history teacher. He shares with his friends a bit about some not so well known Black Americans. I love reading them each year and learning about some amazing people I haven't heard about previously. Today's book shares about the lives of four Black Americans who have made history. These are four well known people, but this book is perfect for an library, classroom or home. It adds so much about these four heroes as well as giving more information about Black History in America. The book is from the Editors of Time for Kids and it is called Heroes of Black History: Biographies of Four Great Americans

This book shares the details of Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks and Barack Obama. I am going to focus on Rosa Parks today.  The details it gives on each is amazing. It races them through their entire lives (or what has been lived thus far). Time for Kids provides a curriculum guide to use this book in the classroom.  The curriculum guide provides discussion questions, a book scavenger hunt, activities for each of the four heroes, fast facts about each of the heroes and more!

The book shares so many details about Rosa Parks from her birth to the fights her parents had about her father's long periods of being away from the family to the details of her education and meeting her husband. Then of course her work with the NAACP and the famous arrest for refusing to give up her seat on the bus and beyond. Rosa lived an amazing life and worked for equal rights and helped others.

Throughout the book there are pictures mixed with the easy to read sentences about the four heroes. This book is recommended for ages 8 and up. The words are at a middle grade reading level but there is enough information for a young adult audience as well. There are also asides about what was occuring at that point in history. For example there is a bit about the Harlem Renaissance for Rosa Parks. This of course adds more to the reader's understanding of the hero's life. Each hero's story ends with a timeline of key dates on the hero's life. The book also begins a timeline for Black American History.

Then at the end of the book there is a list of other Black Heroes to look up and learn more about as well.

It gives the names and a bit of information about many other famous Black Americans. Overall the book is a wonderful addition to our multicultural library. I hope you will check it out!
